In social studies we are learning about the constitution.(It's the plan for the government). We are also writing a constitution for Frenzy Island (a make-believe community with a lot of problems). We did it as a class and in groups. We presented our group plans to make sure everyone knew how to do it. Then we wrote a plan of action all by ourselves. It was very fun. That's what we are learning in social studies. |

The Halloween season is here. I hope all the kids are filled with fear. At Halloween time we have a big party. It is really fun. All the kids enjoy it. We have a half day too. We start the day off with a spelling test. Then, straight to music - don't be late. Then to gym. It is very fun. Then we come back to class and have cider and donuts and go down to the parade. That's our Halloween! We have been learning multiplication strategies in math. One example is the, "Use an easier problem" strategy. This means if you know 5 x 5 = 25 and you want to know what 5 x 8 equals, you can start counting on by 5's starting at 25 because you know it took five groups of five to get there. Then count on by 5's from 25 three more times - 30, 35, 40. So 5 x 8 = 40.
For science we are learning about crayfish and beetles. So far we have been feeding them and giving them new water. We got to hold them and put them on our desks. We wrote about their body parts and how many of each crayfish have. Today we have to pack up the animals and send them back. This week one of our students was a good communicator. She shared a book in Hebrew! She read it in Hebrew and then in English. She also shared her writing too.
This week in math we've been working on multiplication and division strategies. We've done targets, equal group models, equal share drawings and count-bys on fingers. Here's some divisions; 12/2=6, 16/8=2 and 6/3=2. Here are some multiplications; 6x2=12, 8x2=16, and 2x3=6. We put puzzles together with related math facts.
This week we have been reading Stone Fox and writing in a packet. We've been doing a lot of learning about the characters little Willy, Grandfather, and Stone Fox too.
This week we learned more about seeds. Two days ago we weighed seeds. And we found out seeds weighed different weights. Also we found out soaked seeds weigh double the amount of dry seeds. The three parts we found when we opened the soaked seeds were the seed coat, the embryo, and the cotyledon.
This week we have been learning what nouns are and what they mean. In one of our centers we are worked on nouns. Nouns mean a person, place, or a thing. We also made a poster of what nouns are and we took pictures from magazines and glued them down to the poster. Next week I think we are going to learn about verbs. I can't wait to see what the whole year brings with types of words.
